X-ray of lungs. Coloured X-ray of the chest of a healthy adult. The lungs occupy the areas at left and right enclosed by the ribs (pink). The heart occupies the space in the lower part of the lung on the right. The diaphragm is found under the lower ribs. Also seen here are the clavicles (collar bones) - the horizontal bones at upper left and right. The lungs supply the body with oxygen needed for aerobic metabolism, as well as eliminating the waste product carbon dioxide. The total surface area of lung tissue exposed to the air in a healthy adult is about twice the area of a tennis court.
