Lungs and heart. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a horizontal slice through a healthy patient's chest. The front of the patient is at top of image. Lungs are blue, at upper centre a red circle is the location of the heart and major blood vessels. Bones are yellow with the sliced backbone (vertebrae) seen at lower centre. Bones of the rib cage are seen around the lungs, also enclosed by the patient's muscles (red). CT scans are made from multiple X-rays combined together on computer and "sliced" in any chosen direction.
