Caption

Healthy chest X-ray. X-ray of the chest of a healthy three year old child. The ribs are seen as a set of horizontal bands enclosing the lungs (dark areas either side of spine) and the heart (white mass, centre). The lower jaw (mandible) is seen at upper left. The spinal column is seen running vertically down from the head. Chest X- rays are taken to diagnose diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosis and lung cancer. These would show up as abnormal, shaded areas over the lungs. As this patient is healthy, the lungs appear black.
