Chest X-ray. Coloured X-ray of the chest showing the lungs (dark). The lungs and heart are enclosed and protected by the ribs (horizontal, orange) which meet at the sternum (breastbone, green, down centre). The heart (green/yellow) is partly seen protruding from behind the sternum at lower right. At the base of the rib cage is the diaphragm (green, bottom). The lungs contain air sacs surrounded by capillaries, which bring blood very close to the inhaled air. This allows red blood cells to release carbon dioxide to be exhaled and to take up oxygen to be used to fuel body processes.
