Lungs. Computer artwork of a naked man with a healthy pair of lungs (red). The trachea (windpipe) is seen at the centre top of the chest. This splits into two bronchi, one for each lung. Inside the lungs the bronchi further divide into many bronchioles (not seen). Each bronchiole becomes smaller, finally ending in alveoli (tiny air sacs). The lungs are the site of gaseous exchange; oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves.
