Caption

False-colour x-ray of the male pelvic area, showing the scrotum (bottom), the sac which houses the 2 testes & the penis (right). The penis is comprised mainly of columns of vascular tissue; during erection muscular contractions restrict venous return of blood & the columns become engorged & rigid. The penile urethra (the passage along the penis that conveys both urine & semen) may be clearly seen. The testes contain the seminiferous tubules that produce sperm, which travel from the testes to urethra during ejaculation. Behind the penis is the humerus (thigh bone) & at top, the ball & socket joint of the hip.
