Light micrograph of a transverse section of human spermatic cord. The characteristically stellate central duct is lined with columnar epithelial cells with prominent purple nuclei, abutting a delicate basement membrane (pink line). Next to this is the inner layer of smooth muscle, with fibres lying longitudinal with respect to the duct. This appears as a dense pink annulus with purple nuclei within. Beyond, the middle layer of smooth muscle is arranged with its fibres lying in a circle around the duct. The outer smooth muscle layer, again longitudinal, can just be seen at each corner. Magnification x20 at 35mm size.
