Endoscope image of the top part of the uterus, showing the openings into the 2 fallopian tubes that connect the uterus with the 2 ovaries (the site of the production of ova - eggs). The uterus (womb) is the part of the female reproductive tract that is specialized to allow an embryo to become implanted in its inner wall & to subsequently nourish the growing foetus from the maternal blood circulation. The non-pregnant uterus is a pear-shaped organ, about 7.5 cm long, which is suspended in the pelvic cavity by means of peritoneal folds (ligaments) & fibrous bands. The lower part joins the vagina at the cervix (the neck of the womb).
