Female reproductive system. Computer illustration showing the internal reproductive organs of the human female. These organs lie within the pelvic cavity of the abdomen. At lower centre is the vagina which forms the muscular birth canal, and which opens to the exterior. The vagina ends at the cervix, the mouth of the uterus, drawn here as two horizontal lines. At centre is the uterus, a pear-shaped, hollow muscular organ or "womb" in which the embryo implants and grows. Two fallopian tubes, funnel-shaped with finger-like projections (at left and right) receive the released egg and pass it to the uterus. The pair of ovaries (orange) release eggs at monthly intervals.
