Fallopian tube. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of epithelial cells in the Fallopian tube. The Fallopian tube (oviduct) is a muscular tube connecting each ovary to the uterus, and down which the egg passes. The lumen is at top frame. Lining the lumen are columnar epithelial cells (blue) of two types: ciliated cells (with green tufts of cilia), and secretory cells (with smaller microvilli). The beating cilia move the egg towards the uterus. Secretory cells provide nutrients for the egg. At lower frame are collagen and reticular fibrils (yellow) of the basal lamina. Magnification: x1,100 at 6x7cm size.
