Graafian follicle in ovary. Light micrograph of a section through a Graafian follicle in the human ovary. The Graafian follicle develops at monthly intervals in fertile, non-pregnant women. It contains the almost mature oocyte or egg (round at centre). Around the oocyte (pale, irregular) is the follicular antrum containing an accumulation of follicular fluid. Forming a layer of even thickness around the periphery of the follicle is the zona granulosa (purple dots). To the outside of this layer are the oestrogen-secreting theca interna and theca externa. Rupture of the Graafian follicle releases the oocyte (ovulation). Magnification: x200 at 35mm size.
