Placenta. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a chorionic villus in the healthy placenta of a 37 year old woman at full term. A placenta contains thousands of these finger-like projections. Each villus contains bundles of blood vessels which bring the foetus' blood very close to the mother's. This allows the exchange of gases, nutrients and waste with the mother's blood, as the foetus cannot breathe, feed or excrete while in the womb. Magnification: x1100 at 6x7cm size.
