Menopausal uterus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lining (endometrium) of a uterus showing signs of the menopause. The symptoms here were brought on by the drug Decapeptyl, used to treat endometriosis. The menopause is the cessation of the fertile period of a woman's life, signalled by ceased production of the hormone oestrogen. The cells' have short microvilli, and there are large gaps between them. The menopause can cause vaginal dryness, hot flushes, loss of libido and anxiety. Magnification: x2100 at 6x7cm size.
