Post-menopausal uterus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lining (endometrium) of the post-menopausal uterus of a 69 year old woman. The menopause is the cessation of the fertile period of a woman's life, signalled by ceased production of the hormone oestrogen. Visible signs here are the lack of ciliated cells (orange), which are far more common in a pre-menopausal uterus, and the large spaces (dark) between cells. The menopause can cause vaginal dryness, hot flushes, loss of libido and anxiety. Magnification: x1100 at 6x7cm size.
