Post-menopausal ovary. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of epithelial cells on the surface of a 69 year old post-menopausal ovary. The cells are irregular in shape and have sparse, short microvilli (orange). The ovaries produce ova (eggs) in fertile women, although this process stops after the menopause, usually around the age of 50. The menopause may cause anxiety, vaginal dryness, hot flushes and a loss of libido. Magnification: x200 at 6x7cm size.
