Caption

Cervix epithelium. Coloured scanning electron mic- rograph (SEM) of squamous epithelial cells on the menopausal cervix of a 48 year old woman. This is the exocervix, the region which projects into the vagina, also called the portio vaginalis. The borders between these flattened cells are light green. Squamous epithelium lines both the vagina and the vaginal part of the cervix. These squamous cells do not undergo a periodical change with the menstrual cycle, but are instead continuously shed and replaced. The menopause may cause vaginal dryness, hot flushes, anxiety and loss of libido. Magnification: x1000 at 6x7cm size.
