Female reproductive system. Artwork of the female reproductive system, showing anatomical positions. The ovaries (blue and yellow, centre left and right) are the site of production of the female gametes, the oocytes. An oocyte (orange) is released from the ovary at ovulation and passes into the fallopian tube (light blue and green, left and right). It may be fertilised by a sperm, introduced via the vagina (light blue, lower centre), which travels through the cervix at the neck of the womb (uterus, green) and into the fallopian tubes. The oocyte passes to the womb where, if fertilised, it develops until birth.
