Placenta surface. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a human placenta, showing the finger-like projections known as chorionic villi. Each villus contains bundles of blood vessels which bring the blood of the foetus and its mother into close proximity. The placenta lines the uterus during pregnancy, providing the foetus with nutrients and respiratory gases and removing the waste products which it generates. Magnification x340 at 35mm size.
