Ovulation. Image 2 of 5. Endoscope view of a Graafian follicle (swollen pink area) in an ovary (white, centre). This is a mature, fluid-filled ovarian follicle that is about to rupture and release an oocyte (female reproductive cell) that is developing into an ovum (egg). The egg will not be visible on this scale. The egg will be released to travel to the uterus (not seen) along the Fallopian tube of its ovary. A successfully- fertilised egg may develop into a baby during pregnancy. For a sequence of endoscopic images showing the stages of ovulation, see images P616/326-330.
