Female reproductive endocrine system, computer artwork. At lower centre is the uterus (womb), a hollow muscular organ in which the foetus develops during pregnancy. On either side of the uterus are the ovaries, which store a woman's eggs, the female sex cells, and also produce the female sex hormones progesterone and oestrogen. Progesterone prepares the uterus for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur its levels decrease, which leads to menstruation. If pregnancy does occur it helps to maintain the uterus and support the development of the embryo. Oestrogen helps to regulate the maturation of the female sex characteristics during puberty and maintains fertility up until the menopause.
