Illustration of an ovary and a fallopian tube. The major female sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone, are produced in the corpora lutea of the ovaries. Estrogen plays a major role in the maintenance of the reproductive organs and the development of secondary sex characteristics. Progesterone plays a role in preparing and maintaining the uterus, which supports the development of an embryo.
