Human egg cell. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of a slice through a primary oocyte (egg cell) inside a maturing follicle from the ov- ary of a mature female. The oocyte (green) con- tains a central nucleus (yellow) and is surrounded by the granulosa cells (red) of the follicle. Be- tween the granulosa cells and the oocyte is the zona pellucida (blue), a thick layer of glycopro- tein, through which finger-like processes can be seen connecting the granulosa cells to the mem- brane of the oocyte. This picture shows one stage in the maturation of an egg cell during the ovar- ian cycle, before the cell's release from the ovary (ovulation). Magnification x75 at 35mm size.
