Caption

Human ovum. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cells from the cumulus oophorus of a developing human ovum (egg cell). This is from a 43 year old woman. The cumulus oophorus is a cell layer which surrounds the ovum (not seen), and is made up of a concentration of granulosa cells from an ovarian follicle's inner lining. Numerous microvilli (orange) are seen on the cells' surfaces. Ovarian follicles mature in an ovary for 10-14 days before they rupture (ovulation), releasing the ovum down a fallopian tube to the uterus. Magnification: x2500 at 6x7cm size.
