Ovarian follicles. Light micrograph of a section through two ovarian follicles (round) at an early stage of development. Ovarian follicles are where an egg (ovum, reproductive cell) develops from the oocytes (a precursor stage to the ovum) in the ovaries. A follicle matures in 10-14 days and then bursts to release the ovum. Women usually release a single ovum every menstrual cycle (about once a month). Magnification: x1280 at 6x7cm size.
