Caption

Fertilised human egg. Light micrograph of a human egg cell after fertilisation. Inside the egg are two rounded pronuclei, one comes from the egg and one from the sperm. When they fuse, the egg becomes a zygote containing the full 46 human chromosomes. Around the egg is a thick zona pellucida layer; sperm can be seen (upper right & lower left) embedded in this layer. This egg will soon begin its first cell division. Magnification: x400 at 35mm size.
