Human chromosomes. Artwork of a standing figure in silhouette surrounded by chromosomes. Chromosomes are the store of genetic information, and are responsible for passing hereditary characteristics from parents to their offspring. Humans have 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent. Chromosomes are made up of long strands of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and proteins, and have regions called genes which carry the genetic code. This code is represented by the sequence of bases on the DNA molecule.
