Male/female sex chromosomes. Conceptual image of the X and Y human chromosomes and their role in determining the sex of an individual. At top is an X and Y chromosome which determines male characteristics. The Y chromosome has been altered in shape and size to appear much larger and more Y-shaped than it really is. At bottom are two X chromosomes that determine female characteristics. Every human cell has 46 chromosomes, of which the other 22 pairs are identical in both males and females. Chromosomes carry genetic information in the form of genes and the sex chromosomes carry the genes which control sexual development.
