Genetic disease, conceptual artwork. Chromosome weighing down a man. This could represent the effect of having a hereditary disease on a person's lifestyle. Chromosomes are composed of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) coiled around proteins. DNA contains sections, called genes, that encode the structure and function of every cell in the body. Some genes can increase a person's likelihood of developing a disease. Many diseases can have genetic causes, including cancer, Alzheimer's disease and diabetes, that can be passed on to the next generation.
