Early metaphase of mitosis. Light micrograph (LM) of a whitefish cell (Coregonus sp.) undergoing cell division (mitosis). The cell is in the the early metaphase (second) stage of mitosis. Individual chromosomes can be seen within the cell as black thread-like structures (centre). During metaphase, the spindle fully develops (left and right of chromosomes) and the chromosomes align at the metaphase plate, which is equally distant from the two spindle poles. For a sequence showing mitosis, see images P673/069-081.
