Endoscopic image of the human embryo in vivo after 4 weeks, showing the retina of the eye (dark spot), & above this the developing brain. A primitive mouth opening is seen left of the retina. The blood vessels (diagonally, left to right) connect embryo and yolk sac, supplying nourishment until the 6th week of development. An embryonic hand (bottom) extends from an arm bud. The endoscope, a series of lenses and a fibre- optic light source, is inserted through the cervix and manipulated until a "window" into the amniotic sac is found (area where amniotic wall is thinner).
