Endoscopic image of the human foetus in vivo, after 11 weeks, showing the extent of development of the foot. The foot, at this stage, has developed more rapidly than the rest of the leg, but the leg will soon catch up. The grey area to the right of the foot is an air bubble in the amniotic sac. The endoscope, a series of lenses & a fibre-optic light source, is inserted through the cervix (the neck of the womb) and manipulated until a "window" into the amniotic sac is found (ie an area where the wall is thinner).
