Endoscopic image of the human embryo in vivo, after 5 weeks, centred on the hand & arm, with the head at the top. At this stage in development the hand is almost as long as the arm: translucent skin allows the blood vessels in the hand to be seen. The endoscope, a series of lenses and a fibre-optic light source, is inserted through the cervix (the neck of the womb) and manipulated until a "window" into the amniotic sac is found (ie an area where the wall is thinner).
