The human foetus during the 3rd month of development, surrounded by the protective layers of the chorion (outer layer) and the fluid-filled amnion. After 8 weeks the embryo has become a foetus, ie it vaguely resembles the ultimate infant. During the 3rd month growth is rapid, weight increases 8-10 fold: the eyes have migrated from the sides of the head, & the primitive features of the nose, ear & mouth have been formed. The head is large, with a bulging forehead. Upper & lower limbs have developed, the upper ones moreso, with forearm, wrist & hands discernable. Interal sexual differentiation occurs, with external genitalia appearing later.
