The face & hands of the human foetus during the 5th month of development. The maturation of the nervous & muscular systems allows the foetus to perform simple reflex actions, ie sucking its thumb. At this stage it begins sucking in amniotic fluid, which the kidneys dischage slowly back into the fluid; waste products are not discharged via the rectum, so the mother's body is active at this time in removing waste. The eyes remain closed, but the ear is developed, allowing the foetus to respond to noise.
