The human foetus during the 4th month, showing the extent of development of the head (the eyelids have not yet formed & the retina appears as a dark spot), the arm (which has developed into the wrist, forearm, hand & fingers at a faster rate than the lower limb). The ribs are visible through the thin skin (protected by an oily secretion). The head still appears large in proportion to the rest of the body; the imminent development of the lower abdomen will reduce that difference. The umbilical cord, connecting the foetus with its mother's circulation via the placenta, is visible above the head.
