Caption

The human embryo after 4-5 weeks development (centre, head at top, primitive spine curving around to right). At this stage the brain is undergoing radical changes; the 3 original divisions (the fore-, mid- & hindbrain) further divide to form 5 new divisions. By symmetrical growth the brain makes a series of bends which causes the head region to curve downwards. The eyes are evident as bulges on either side of the head; the retinas appear as dark areas. Photograph from the Guigoz film "Naissance du cerveau dix milliards de galaxies" by Claude Edelmann.
