The neural tube of a human embryo 20 days after fertilisation. The neural tube is the embryological structure from which the brain and spinal cord develop. It consists of a hollow tube of ectoderm tissue formed by the fusion of two edges of a groove in a plate of primitive nerve tissue. Failure of correct fusion may result in a number of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.
