Human foetus. Illustration of a cutaway of a human uterus, to show an 8 month old (36 week) human foetus. At this stage the foetus weighs about 2.5kg. It is perfectly formed, with the internal organs almost fully mature. The head is haired, and is in the normal position facing the cervical canal. At labour the cervical canal widens to allow the baby to pass into the vaginal canal (at bottom). The placenta (red, at centre left) and umbilical cord are visible. The placenta is attached to the lining of the uterus and acts, via the umbilical cord, as an organ of respiration, nutrition and excretion for the foetus.
