Caption

Foetus urinating (32 week old). Doppler ultrasound scan of the penis of a male foetus aged 32 weeks, in the process of urinating. The body of the foetus is at left; the penis is at centre. Urine is coloured blue in the urethra, the tube leading from the bladder to the tip of the penis. Urine emerging from the penis is coloured red/blue as it contacts amniotic fluid in the womb. As the urine disperses, it is coloured blue/white. A foetus of 32 weeks (8 months) is about 30cm long (crown- rump) and 2.1 kilograms in weight. Doppler ultra- sound uses high-frequency sound to detect whether foetal development is normal, and it can register moving particles like urine and blood.
