Ten week old foetus. Coloured ultrasound scan of a 10 week old healthy foetus in the womb, seen in side view. The foetus body appears pink (centre), and its large head is to the left, facing up and right. It is in the amniotic sac (black), a fluid filled bag which protects the developing foetus. The crown-rump length (sitting height) of a foetus aged 10 weeks is about 6 centimetres and its weight about 20 grams. Ultrasound scanning uses high-frequency sound waves to obtain an image of the foetus in the uterus, and is a diagnostic tool to confirm foetal age and to detect any malformations.
