Caption

Near term foetus. Artwork of a foetus near term in the breech position over a pregnant body outline. The breech position is where the foetus presents its buttocks or feet to the cervix, and can cause birth complications. At full term, the average foetus weighs about 3.5 kilograms, and is around 50 centimetres from head to rump. The foetus is surrounded by amniotic fluid which protects it from damage during pregnancy. During the later stages of pregnancy, the foetus can move about in the amniotic sac (yellow) containing the fluid. At upper centre is a profile of a breast. Breasts swell and start to produce milk during pregnancy, which provides nutrition for the baby.
