Foetus. Coloured ultrasound scan of a healthy 9- week-old human foetus (red) in the uterus. At this age, the foetus' crown-rump length (sitting height) is about 5 centimetres and its weight is about 10 grams. In ultrasound scanning, high- frequency sound waves are transmitted into the body. An image is formed from waves that are reflected back off internal structures. Ultrasound enables the foetus to be accurately aged, thereby giving an estimated date of delivery. Ultrasound is also used to make sure that the foetus is developing normally.
