Foetus. Bones in the hand of a 14 week old foetus. Hardened bone appears dark red here. The gaps between the ends of bones are filled with cartilage (not seen), which forms the matrix upon which hard bone forms. Seen here are the phalanges of the fingers and the metacarpals of the palm. At this stage of its development the foetus weighs around 10 grams and has a crown-rump length of up to 11 centimetres. Alizarin red dye.
