Miscarriage. Ultrasound scan of the spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) of a foetus. The foetal sac devoid of a growing foetus is the oval-shaped dark area at upper left, circled by the wall of the uterus (green). A miscarriage can result from numerous causes, including uterine abnormalities, genital infections, genetic defects and hormonal causes. Ultrasound scans use reflected high- frequency sound waves to build up a picture of internal body organs.
