Embryo. Coloured 3-D ultrasound scan of a seven- week-old embryo (upper center) in the uterus. Between weeks six and eight the face becomes recognisable, the trunk straightens, the tail disappears and the limbs become jointed. At this stage of development the embryo is around 2 centimetres long. Ultrasound scanning is a diagnostic technique that sends high-frequency sound waves into the body via a transducer. The returning echoes are recorded and used to build an image of an internal structure. Foetal ultrasound scanning is routine during pregnancy.
