Foetus. Coloured ultrasound scan of a 20-week-old foetus. At this stage of development, the foetus is around 19 centimetres long and weighs less than 500 grams. Ultrasound is a diagnostic technique that sends high-frequency sound waves into the body via a transducer. The returning echoes are recorded and used to build an image of an internal structure.
