Human embryo in its amniotic sac, computer artwork. Human embryos are fertilised eggs in their earliest stage of development; less than 8 weeks old. By this stage, primitive organ systems have formed and are developing rapidly. The retina is visible as a black spot and the arms and legs are beginning to grow. When it reaches the age of 8 weeks the embryo will be called a foetus.
