Human foetus at nine weeks. The foetus is enclosed in the amniotic sac, which contains amniotic fluid that cushions the developing foetus. The foetus is connected to its mother by the umbilical cord, which runs diagonally across centre. This provides the developing foetus with nutrients. Most babies are born at 38 weeks of age, in the 40th week of pregnancy. The discrepancy arises as pregnancy is measured from the last menstrual period, rather than the age of the baby.
