Foetus. Coloured 3-D ultrasound scan of a foetus at nine weeks. This is the stage when the embryo becomes a foetus. At nine weeks the foetus measures around 2.5 centimetres. The limbs start to develop and the webbing between the fingers and toes disappears, leaving separate digits. Ultrasound scanning is a diagnostic technique that sends high-frequency sound waves into the body via a transducer. The returning echoes are recorded and used to build an image of an internal structure. Foetal ultrasound scanning is routine during pregnancy.
