Twelve week old foetus. Coloured 3-D ultrasound scan of a twelve week old foetus in the womb. Its head is at centre right, with its body extending to left centre. At this stage the foetus' facial features are formed, although its ears are still primitive. It is also possible to tell the sex of the foetus from an ultrasound. Ultrasound scanning is a diagnostic technique that sends high-frequency sound waves into the body via a transducer. The returning echoes are recorded and used to build an image of an internal structure. Foetal ultrasound scanning is routine during pregnancy.
